My goal when making these was to create a set of cards with simple, illustration and type centered designs. In choosing what the cards would say, I wanted to use the words of a hymn which would be nostalgic to many but also provide a message which is still relevant today. The writer of the lyrics, Placide Cappeau, was a French wine merchant and political activist. His values are well reflected in the lyrics to O Holy Night. Cappeau successfully integrated the Biblical values of simplicity, peace, and integrity into his writings. The song was eventually banned in the Catholic Church after Cappeau left the church. However, American minister and abolitionist John Sullivan Dwight later published the English translation and the song has since been a classic in American homes throughout the Christmas season. Although O Holy Night was written well over 100 years ago, the messaging of the song is still relevant today and an excellent reminder for Christians that the teachings of Jesus include peace and inclusivity.
