My first goal when creating a logo for the 2024 TypeCon was to come up with a theme that was both type related and highlighted the unique features of Portland, where it will be taking place. After creating a mind map to organize my thoughts, I picked the theme "ascender". Ascender is the term for any lowercase letter that extends above the x-height. Proximity to nature and love of the outdoors is a huge part of Northwest culture. Hiking, mountaineering, and climbing are all popular hobbies in this area. The term "ascender" doubles as type terminology and a representation of some of the Northwest's greatest features.
